Berry Collective
DO FARM SERVICE for U-PICK Berry Collective MEMBERSHIP in 2009

With feedback from this past summer's pickers and other farm advocates, we have decided to more fully pursue the idea of a Berry Collective.

berryhand.jpg"A collective is a group of people who share or are motivated by at least one common issue or interest, or work together on a specific project(s) to achieve a common objective."

We see the health of the farm as our common objective-- so that we can all share in the bounty of local, organic food. In order to develop more direct and nurturing connections with community members, we invite you to be a part of both sustaining and enjoying Finnriver's berry crop.

Folks will be invited to volunteer to do Farm Service instead of paying a membership fee to join the Berry Collective. This process will surely require a greater commitment than just paying money, but we think the rewards will be greater too.  Working together to care for the land can be a transformational communal effort.

Here's how it works:

• Folks who volunteer at least ONE DAY (8 hours total) during the farm year, will automatically join the Berry Collective and earn U-Pick access to the farm. You offer your service to help the farm, and the farm offers you the unique opportunity of the reduced cost and great joy of U-pick. A Farm Service calendar will be linked to our website so you can view the options throughout the year.

• Volunteering may take the form of field or administrative labor. Picking, planting, sweeping, pruning, mulching, weeding. If you are not interested in the physical labor, we have other "indoor" jobs as well. Folks have also volunteered to do financial services, yoga for our farm crew, chiropractic and more-- and these services can be considered forms of Farm Service as well.

• A Farm Service calendar will be linked to our website so you can view the options throughout the year at: http://www.my.calendars.net/finnriver
The "volunteer year" will run from June to June (although we will start late this year).

• We will ask volunteers to either arrive for morning farm service at 9:00 am or for the afternoon shift at 1 pm.  This helps keep the farm crew on track.  Bring a water bottle, lunch picnic, work gloves, rain-gear, sun-hat but NO DOGS and NO SMOKING please.  Remember that we keep bees on the farm too.

Feel free to contact us with questions.
We hope this format allows the Berry Collective to build stronger connections to the farm.
And we think the berries will like the loving attention from so many good folks!
